Frequently Asked Questions About Mindfulness Meditation
How do I get started with meditation and mindfulness?
You begin exactly where you are. To attend a drop-in meditation group, class or workshop, no experience is needed, only a willingness to show up and practice. Jean's classes, workshops, and meditation groups are designed to welcome people gently, at their own pace, with no pressure to be anywhere other than where they already are. To get started in A Mindful Life group, first gain some meditation experience through the drop-in groups or workshops and when you are ready, talk with Jean about joining a group.
What is A Mindful Life and How Is It Different Than A Meditation Group?
A Mindful Life is a mindfulness meditation and personal growth group led by Jean Vitrano in Maplewood, NJ. They typically run in 8-week segments and ask for a bigger commitment to showing up to the group. Each session weaves together meditation, followed by self-reflective and gratitude practices often done by journaling and sharing as a group or in pairs. There is an emphasis on mindful communication, as well as the development of greater awareness, self-kindness, and compassion. There is more inner reflection and sharing than in a meditation group or class. The drop-in meditation groups are focused solely on meditation itself.
How do I sign up?
Classes, workshops, and A Mindful Life groups require advance registration. Drop-In Meditations do not require advanced registration. If you are not sure where to start, the best first step is to reach out through the contact form. Jean is happy to share what's currently available and help you find the right fit.
Do I need meditation experience to participate?
Not for drop-in meditations, classes or workshops unless specified — beginners are genuinely welcome. To join A Mindful Life group, some experience is required. Drop-in meditations and workshops are generally offered in a way that meets people at many different stages, whether you've never sat in meditation before or you're returning after time away. To join A Mindful Life group, some experience is required.
How can mindfulness meditation help with stress and overwhelm?
Mindfulness doesn't ask you to make stress disappear. It offers something more sustainable: the capacity to respond to difficulty (anxiety, overwhelm, reactivity, difficult emotions) with greater awareness, presence, and compassion. Many participants find that over time, they feel calmer, more grounded, and more able to navigate their lives and relationships with intention rather than impulse.
