SUNDAY NIGHT MINDFULNESS MEDITATION GROUP

Every Sunday night 7:30 – 8:45 pm

Drop-in group, no registration required $10 suggested donation

St. George's Church, Parish Hall, 550 Ridgewood Rd., Maplewood, NJ 07040

(entrance is at the back of the church, by the parking lot)

We will not meet on the following days in 2020: 2/16, 5/24, 8/9, 8/16.

Whether you are new to meditation or already have a practice, we welcome you to join us. The evenings will have guided, walking, and silent meditation periods. Some instruction will be given. Together we practice the tools of mindfulness that bring us into the present moment, develop greater compassion, strengthen our concentration, and allow our body and mind to rest right here, right now. By stopping, focusing on our breathing, and observing our thoughts and feelings we gain clarity, spaciousness and the ability to stay present to whatever arises without reacting habitually. By practicing with the support of community, our commitment to living mindfully is strengthened. There is also time to share (optional) about our practice and deepen our skills of mindful listening and mindful speech. Please arrive early and avoid wearing fragrances for the comfort of the group. Chairs and cushions available.

A Mindful Life is a place for you to practice the tools you most likely already know will help you to live with more presence, ease, and happiness, but often get pushed aside for later, which rarely comes. Each week we come together in a uniquely intimate and safe community to practice:1) mindfulness meditation, 2) gratefulness, 3) self-kindness and loving-kindness, 4) Reflective Exercises. Groups are limited to 12.

This will be your dedicated space to listen to yourself, observe, reflect, and have space to be just as you are within a warm community of people who support you. It gives you precious time with yourself to remember what matters to you and to know what is alive in you and to share from that place. I am often told that the deeper, more genuine level of connection and communication that happens in these groups is hard to find outside. Each group is a special community which you, too, can be a part of.

Main Tools in A Mindful Life:

  • Mindfulness meditation. We start each session with 20 minutes of meditation.

  • Gratefulness. Each week we work with a specific practice to contemplate on gratitude. It won’t be pushing gratitude on you, as if you “should” be grateful, but will invite you to enjoy what is around the specific topic. Gratitude brings more joy.

  • Loving-Kindness and Self-Kindness. There will be an emphasis on cultivating kindness for ourselves and others. This will come in the form of guided exercises and meditations. We can find a kinder, gentler way of being with ourselves and others.

  • Reflective Exercises. I will bring in a weekly topic and will ask a series of deepening questions for you to explore. I will guide you into your body to get a whole body awareness of what might be present. This will be a way for you to get to observe, to hear your needs, to know yourself better by diving in and asking yourself to stay with what is present underneath a subject.

Who Might Benefit?

  • Do you feel you don’t have time for yourself?

  • Do you want someone to guide you in practices that will help you live with more presence, awareness, kindness and joy?

  • Do you want to feel more connected to yourself and be more of your genuine self?

  • Do you want deeper levels of connection and communication with others?

  • Do you struggle with negative thinking, anxiety or anger?

  • Do you find yourself to be overly controlling and unable to go with the flow?

  • Do you find yourself to be judgmental (of yourself and/or others)?
